Fortis was founded by Walter Vogt in 1912, and his wisest move would come some twelve years later when he came into business contact with John Harwood, the inventor of the automatic wristwatch. Two years later in 1926, Fortis released the first self-winding timepiece, the Harwood Automatic. By 1954 Fortis had taken over world-wide circulation of alarm watches. In 1992 Fortis released a feature which would allow the first watch to indicate the fullness of the 52 calendar weeks. Their watches have accompanied space flights of Russia and Germany in space mission MIR 97. Fortis has a way of being ahead of the times and that is why the Fortis watch will keep you on time for all your events and travels! Award-winning for the work performed on automatic watches in space, the timepieces of the cosmonaut collection exclusively bear the official logo of the Russian Space Agency on their screw-down casebacks. Cosmonauts of the European-Russian space mission receive (as part of their official equipment) a reliable Fortis chronograph. Fortis believes that their watches are reliable in space, and they are doubly so on Earth.
